A collection of work made in deep winter on the surface of frozen water in sub zero temperatures

Ink and the Elements

The following collection is a series of work created early in the cold days of early 2021. They are partly inspired by the ice formations by the river which I began to observe while there. I also wanted to see the effects of exposure on the ink and paper when they were left outside to the elements. Sometimes while working the ink would be freezing as I applied it to the paper creating all manner of shapes and patterns. Due to the nature of ink these remained in place once they had dried and can be seen in the second section of images below. The first collection shows the work while being created and after being left on the ice sometimes for a number of days. All the colours are from plants and trees growing nearby including Sloe Berries, Alder Cones and Ivy leaves.

Sometimes I think the paintings look like viewing earth from space or perhaps some part of the cosmos, or even depictions of Consciousness itself.

Altered by the elements and the effects of exposure the Ink takes on a life of it’s own.
